The IJP’s founders, R
aymond M. Brown, Esq. and Wanda M. Akin, Esq., currently represent the first Darfurian victims recognized by the ICC to participate in the proceedings related to the Darfur Situation. They also represent Darfurian victims participating in the case against Sudanese President Al-Bashir.
The IJP engages in the following functions:
- Providing legal and logistical support to individuals seeking to submit applications for participation in proceedings at the ICC;
- Educating human rights advocates and activists through internships and speaking engagements throughout the United States and abroad;
- Training lawyers, intermediaries, and others on the ICC and other fora on jurisprudence where international human rights issues are adjudicated;
- Identifying and training intermediaries, inter alia, translators and community leaders, to provide critical assistance to victims of human rights violations; and
- Connecting survivors and their children with specialized medical care for the emotional, physical, and sexual trauma they have suffered (see HARP below).
HARP: Health and Reparations Project
While working with members of the Darfuri Diaspora, we noticed a community-wide malaise and depression that has developed as a result of the traumatic experiences many had in Darfur and the difficulties faced when adapting to a new environment as a refugee. HARP seeks to understand this phenomenon and ultimately address the suffering in the population by:
- Assessing and documenting specific pressing medical and mental health and welfare needs in the Darfurian community;
- Galvanizing national and international support for immediately alleviating these needs;
- Producing data on the specific types of harm from which the Darfuri refugee community is suffering and using this data to inform discussions on reparations both in the context of the ICC and as part of potential diplomatic solutions.
This project is timely, as the number Darfurian refugees in the United States is expected to increase significantly in the near future, expanding the population that would benefit from this project.
